REQUIREMENTS
All entries in competitive classes will be given an adjudication and a mark for each performance. Certificates will be awarded to competitors achieving first, second and third place standings in each class with a mark of 80 or over. Competitors attaining a mark of 80% or over will be eligible for medallions, cups and awards. However only competitors who are 20 years of age or younger as of December 31st, 2011 or who meet the specific age limits as set out, will be eligible for major scholarships.
All entries in non-competitive classes will be given an adjudication only.
At the discretion of the Festival Committee, all Scholarships and Awards may not be awarded. Please note: All music and speech arts competitors MUST enter a minimum of two (2) classes to qualify for any award.
Please read the Syllabus and Program carefully as award requirements may vary from year to year.
MAJOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS
The Okanagan Valley Music Festival Society of Penticton offers the following major scholarships in all disciplines. Marks of 80% or higher must be achieved to qualify for all awards. Major and runner-up scholarships will only be awarded to competitors who are 20 years of age or younger as of December 31st, 2011 or who meet the specified age limits and requirements as set out in each discipline section.
Please note: Sight reading is required in order to qualify for major scholarships in Piano, and Instrumental Classes. Quick study or sight reading is required for Guitar. Participation in the Technique Workshops will be required for all Dance provincial requirements. These marks will not be considered in mark totals.
MAJOR AND RUNNER-UP SCHOLARSHIPS
Major and runner-up scholarships will only be awarded to competitors who are
20 years of age or younger as of December 31st, 2011 or
who meet the specific age limits as set out.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR PIANOFORTE

SCHOLARSHIP FOR PIANOFORTE
Candidates at Grade I to IV level pianoforte must enter the following categories:
Sight Reading (mark not considered in Scholarship totals) Any THREE pianoforte selections from the category of solos listed in the Syllabus, excluding Untitled Study.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR VOICE - Junior
Candidates must be 14 years or under, and enter the following categories:
Art Song and any THREE selections from the Junior category of Vocal Solos.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR VOICE - Intermediate
Candidates must be 18 years or under, and enter the following categories:
Art Song, and THREE selections from the Intermediate category of Vocal Solos.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR VOICE - Senior
Candidates must be 19 years or over, and enter the following categories:
Art Song, and THREE selections from the Senior category of Vocal Solos.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR MUSICAL THEATRE - Junior
Candidates must be 14 years or under, and enter the following categories:
THREE classes from Comedy, Ballad, Additional Repertoire, Production, Motion Picture Theme Song or Cabaret.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR MUSICAL THEATRE - Intermediate
Candidates must be 15 years or over, and enter the following categories:
THREE classes from Comedy, Ballad, Additional Repertoire, Production, Motion Picture Theme Song or Cabaret.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR MUSICAL THEATRE-Senior
Candidates must be 19 years or over, and enter the following categories:
THREE classes from Comedy, Ballad, Additional Repertoire, Production, Motion Picture Theme Song or Cabaret.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR INSTRUMENTAL includes Strings, Woodwinds and Brass and Guitar
Candidates must be at a Grade 6 level or over and enter the following categories:
Sight Reading or Quick Study (mark not considered in scholarship totals), Sonata or Concerto, 2 contrasting movements (or matching the requirements in the RCM syllabus) and THREE selections from different periods.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR SPEECH AND DRAMATIC ARTS
Candidates must be 13 years or older and enter the following categories: THREE selections from Poetry (all forms), Prose, Dramatic Scene, Public Speaking or Shakespeare Solo.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR DANCE - CLASSICAL SECTION, MAJOR
Candidate 11 years and over must enter the following:
Ballet, and TWO selections from Demi-character, Contemporary Interpretive, Classical Interpretive, Character, Character-National, Modern, Contemporary Ballet.
RUNNER-UP SCHOLARSHIP FOR DANCE - CLASSICAL SECTION, MAJOR
Candidate 11 years and over must enter the following:
Ballet, and TWO selections from Demi-character, Contemporary Interpretive, Classical Interpretive, Character, Character-National, Modern, Contemporary Ballet.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR DANCE - CLASSICAL SECTION, MINOR
Candidate 11 years and over must enter the following:
Ballet, and ONE selection from Demi-character, Contemporary Interpretive, Classical Interpretive, Character, Character-National, Modern, Contemporary Ballet.
RUNNER-UP SCHOLARSHIP FOR DANCE - CLASSICAL SECTION, MINOR
Candidate 11 years and over must enter the following:

SCHOLARSHIP FOR DANCE - MODERN SECTION, MINOR
Candidate 11 years and over must enter the following:
Modern and Contemporary Interpretive.
Cannot be won by a dancer who has won the Major Classical Scholarship or Major Runner-Up Classical Scholarship if marks from Modern and Contemporary Interpretive were used to determine those awards. In such a case this award will go to the next highest mark combining Modern and Contemporary Interpretive.
RUNNER-UP SCHOLARSHIP FOR DANCE - MODERN SECTION, MINOR
Candidate 11 years and over must enter the following:
Modern and Contemporary Interpretive.
Cannot be won by a dancer who has won the Major Classical Scholarship or Major Runner-Up Classical Scholarship if marks from Modern and Contemporary Interpretive were used to determine those awards. In such a case this award will go to the next highest mark combining Modern and Contemporary Interpretive.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR DANCE - STAGE SECTION, MAJOR
Candidate 11 years and over must enter the following:
THREE selections from Variety, Song and Dance, Lyrical, Jazz, Tap or Street Dance, one of which must be Jazz or Tap.
RUNNER-UP SCHOLARSHIP FOR DANCE - STAGE SECTION, MAJOR

DALE CHARLES MEMORIAL BURSARY
Must enter Classical Dance in any solo category; Stage Dance in any solo, duo or trio category: Ballet and Modern Technique Classes and one of the Stage Dance Technique Classes.
MEDALLIONS, CUPS, TROPHIES AND SHIELDS
Medallions will be awarded to the winners of various categories.
These medallions become the permanent property of the recipients.
Cups, trophies and shields will be awarded to the participant with the highest mark in the stated categories, provided that the mark is 80% or greater. A competitor must enter at least three solo classes to be eligible for a solo trophy.

The Programme will list all scholarships and awards for solo and other classes,
scholarships that have to be applied for and the deadline for receipt of these applications.
Eva and Hugh Cleland Scholarship
All of the following requirements must be met by a 2012 Penticton Kiwanis Music Festival participant in order to qualify for the Eva and Hugh Cleland Scholarship.

The participant is from the South Okanagan area (Summerland and south).
-
The participant intends to pursue a career in music teaching, coaching or performance.
-
The participant is a Grade 12 graduating student, or has completed Grade 12 but is not already enrolled in a post-secondary music programme.
-
Within one year of the Festival, the participant must be enrolled in a recognized post-secondary educational institution such as a university or college majoring in music or a diploma course at a music conservatory.

The participant must be of a deserving caliber as determined by the Music Festival Board.

The participant must apply for the scholarship prior to the commencement of the Festival.

If the winner does not meet the guidelines set out in #4, funds will not be dispersed for that year.

In order to apply for this scholarship please submit a short history of your music background and details of how you qualify.
Applications must be received by March 6, 2012. Funds will be paid directly to the educational institution upon receipt of confirmation of the winner’s enrollment.
