It is the responsibility of competitors and teachers to follow the Rules & Regulations of the Festival. Entries are the responsibility of competitors and teachers. Errors or omissions are not the responsibility of the Festival.

All disciplines run at the discretion of the Festival, dependent on sufficient entries.

Note: Sight reading is required for strings Scholarship.

Additional rules pertaining to Strings are:

1. Each competitor shall compete at the same grade level in all solo classes entered.

2. Please state instrument played on entry form.

3. Photocopied music may not be used in the Penticton Kiwanis Music Festival without the written permission of the copyright holder (composer or publisher).

4. Use current RCM Syllabus or equivalent as a guideline for repertoire only. Titled studies are acceptable. Abridged versions of classical music are not acceptable. Selections for the Canadian Composers Class must be composers who are recognized and published. For information contact the Canadian Music Centre at 604 734-4622.

5. Classes will be further subdivided in consideration of age when necessary.

6. Da Capo signs should be observed. Repeat signs should ordinarily be ignored but at the discretion of the teacher and student may be observed where deemed appropriate.

7. Each competitor is responsible for providing their own accompanist.

8. All Suzuki selections to be from Suzuki Violin School volumes. Publisher Summy Birchard.

9. Non-competitive classes are listed at the end of the Strings sections.

10. The following table will set the guidelines for determining Grade levels of Suzuki repertoire.

Competitive Classes
All competitors will be given an adjudication and a mark for each performance and will be eligible for appropriate certificates, cups, awards and/or scholarships.
Non-competitive Classes
All competitors will be given an adjudication only.
Open Level
A student studying full time at a recognized music institution or who has obtained a degree or diploma in music.

STRING CATEGORIES
Sight reading is required for string scholarships

Additonal Repertoire: This class is to be used ONLY for pieces which do not fit in any other category, OR for a second piece in a category already entered. One selection, own choice.

Unaccompanied Bach: Sonata or Partita, one movement only. (Grade VII and up).

Baroque: Any composition by a Baroque composer up to 1750 (i.e., Bach, Telemann).

Classical: Any composition by a Classical composer, (Circa 1750-1825), i.e., Mozart, Beethoven.

Romantic: Any composition by a Romantic composer, (Circa 1825-1910), i.e., Dvorak, Schubert.

Twentieth & Twenty-First Century: Any composition by a twentieth century composer in contemporary idiom, (i.e., Bartok, Copland) except Canadian composers.

Canadian: Any composition by a recognized and published Canadian composer.

Folk Song: Own choice selection from a traditional folk song of any nationality.

Sonata or Sonatina: Two contrasting movements. 

Concerto: Two contrasting movements of any standard Concerto or Concertino. Orchestral part to be played on piano, accompanist not adjudicated.

Sacred: Any standard sacred selection with accompaniment. Classes will be determined by age.

Kreisler: Any piece composed or arranged by Fritz Kreisler.

Fiddle: Waltz, Jig, Reel, Air, etc. with accompaniment. Classes will be determined by age.

Concert Program: Time limit 15 minutes. A mini-recital of three pieces by three different composers showing contrast in style, period, mood. (One mark for the overall performance.)

Duet: Use one entry form per duet, with both players’ names, accompanied by full entry fee. If the two competitors are at a different grade level they shall compete at the higher grade level.May include piano.Please state instruments.

Duet with Advanced Accompaniment: For the younger player who may be encouraged by a familiar person (i.e. teacher, parent, sibling) who accompany on strings or other. Only the lower grade participant is to register. The registrant must play the first part and will be adjudicated.

String,Trio or Quartet or Ensemble: Strings only All players will be adjudicated. Time limit 15 minutes. Suzuki groups: please enter this class.Use one entry form per group and include information for all players.

Instrumental Trio,Quartet or Ensemble: Up to 8 players.Any combination of instruments but must include one string instrument (i.e. Piano Trio). All players will be adjudicated. Time limit 15 minutes.Please include information for all players re: instruments.

Chamber Orchestra: Over 8 players, time limit
15 minutes. Please state approximate age and grade level of players in the special needs box on the competitor tab of the registration. Woodwinds and brass are permitted.

Sight Reading: Music of an appropriate level will be supplied by the adjudicator.

Please enter the above categories by the following grade levels:
Pre Grade 1, Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, ARCT or Equivalent, or Open. Please indicate instrument on entry form.

NON COMPETITIVE STRINGS

Any competitor may enter a non-competitive category as listed above. However, these classes will only take place once the competitive section is completed and Provincial Representatives and Award WInners have been selected. Non-competitive performances will receive an adjudication only. Family duet, trio, quartet or ensembles may include piano.
