It is the responsibility of competitors and teachers to follow the Rules & Regulations of the Festival. Entries are the responsibility of competitors and teachers. Errors or omissions are not the responsibility of the Festival.

All disciplines run at the discretion of the Festival, dependent on sufficient entries.

Check Scholarship Page for Scholarship requirements and other available awards.

Additional rules pertaining to Speech and Dramatic Arts are:
1. The title, author and specific title to be performed must be specified on the entry form.

2. Please time each selection in minutes and seconds. Do not substitute this important information with the maximum time limit. This information must be accurately indicated on your entry form. (Maximum time limits need not be filled).

3. All selections must be memorized except the reading classes and original poetry. Selections not memorized will be considered as a non-competitive selection and no mark will be given.

4. Please state age for all solo and duo entries, with the older age for all duo entries. Please state school grade for all group entries. In mixed grade classes, the highest grade determines the level of entry.

5. Books containing the chosen selections must be given to the door secretary at least 15 minutes prior to the class with the page, starting spot and finishing line clearly marked.

6. Language and content of selections must be of appropriate/acceptable language for all age levels of participants and audience.

7. No props or costumes are to be used except where specified. Competitors should select material that requires an absolute minimum of props, and these should be portable.

8. Competitors in Creative Storytelling and Impromptu Public Speaking must not receive assistance at the time of performance.

9. Photocopies and Internet material may not be used in the Penticton Kiwanis Music Festival without the written permission of the copyright holder (composer or publisher). “Permission to Photocopy” letters and “Authorized Choral” copies must be submitted to the Coordinator two weeks prior to choral competitions.

SPEECH AND DRAMATIC ARTS CATEGORIES

SOLO POETRY, Time Limit, 3 minutes. A selection of poetry from any of the 3 classes listed below. This is for ages 10 and under only.

LYRIC POETRY, Time Limit, 4 min Jr./ 5 min Inter, Sr. & Adults - A short unified poem expressing the poet’s own experience and emotion in a relaxed stance with no movement. The speaker interprets but should not identify with it.

NARRATIVE OR DRAMATIC POETRY, Time Limit, 4 min Jr. / 5 min Inter, Sr. & Adults - A narrative poem which tells a story and usually has dialogue. The telling of the story is the primary concern of the speaker. A portion of a longer poem may be chosen rather than the complete work. A dramatic poem portrays a character distinct from the poet. Both types of poems are written objectively and may be humorous. Gestures may be included to enhance the telling of the story.

CANADIAN POETRY, Time Limit, 4 min Jr. / 5 min Inter, Sr. & Adults - Any poem written by a Canadian poet, either lyric, narrative or dramatic. Presentation of Canadian material is strongly encouraged.

ORIGINAL POEM (Adjudication only), Time Limit, 3 minutes – all – This is the participant’s own composition written and presented. It need not be memorized.

SONNET (Solo), Junior - The sonnet is a lyric poem that consists of fourteen iambic pentameter lines. Only one leading idea, thought, or feeling is treated.

SONNET (Sequence) – Intermediate, Senior & Adult - A sonnet sequence is two sonnets joined together by some work or theme which is common to both of them.

DRAMATIC PROSE, Time Limit, 5 min Jr. / 6 min Inter, Sr. & Adults - This is a selection or excerpt taken from a novel, short story or essay. The selection should include narration, description and dialogue. Vocal characterization is encouraged. The speaker must avoid “acting” the dramatic prose presentation; the focus should be on the voice, spoken in a story-like style.

STORYTELLING, Time Limit, 4 min Jr. / 6 min Inter, Sr. & Adults - This may be an original or the retelling of a known story. Stories must be told, not read, and should sound spontaneous rather than memorized. The storyteller should differentiate between characters and have eye contact with the audience.

CREATIVE STORYTELLNG, Time Limit, 3 minutes – ALL - The Adjudicator presents a picture to the competitor who then creates a story pertaining to it. There will be 5 minutes to prepare. All stories should have a beginning, middle and an end, with characters, setting and a plot. Presentation should follow storytelling format.

BIBLE READING, Time Limit, 3 minutes – ALL – A passage read from the Bible. The King James Authorized version is preferred for its majesty of language.

SIGHT READING, Time Limit, 2 min Jr. / 3 min Inter, Sr. & Adults To read at sight a prose passage selected by the Adjudicator. Competitors will be judged on vocal delivery and should have eye contact with the audience.

PUBLIC SPEAKING, Time Limit, 4 min Jr. / 5 min Inter, Sr. & Adults - This must be one’s original prepared speech. It need not be memorized. Note cards should be used but not read from. Entrants will be judged on research, organization and presentation.

PUBLIC SPEAKING – IMPROMPTU, Time Limit, 2 min Jr. / 3 min Inter, Sr. & Adults - Entrants are required to speak for 2 or 3 minutes on a subject supplied by the Adjudicator. All aspects of delivery will be judged. Ten minutes preparation time will be allowed.

POLYPHONIC VERSE, Time Limit, 6 min K – Gr. 7, 8 min all others – This is one selection of lyric, narrative or dramatic poetry involving two to seven persons combining solo and group voices. (For presentation style, refer to category description.)

CHORAL VERSE, Time Limit, 8 min K – Gr. 7, 10 min all others - This is a group interpretation of poetry consisting of two contrasting selections. The pieces are mostly spoken by the chorus as a whole, although some solo and small group voices may be included. There may be actions or gestures performed by the chorus, but not movement from place to place once the piece has begun. A leader may conduct the performance but may not participate verbally.

CHORIC DRAMA, Time Limit, 8 min K – Gr. 5, 10 min all others - This involves the speaking of one literary selection by a chorus. It is drama in which the chorus plays a major role in the action either as commentator or to advance the action. Actors may then add movement, mime, solo voices and characterizations to help tell the story. Limited costumes, props, music and sound effects may be included. The group leader may assist with set-up, and may conduct the group, but may not participate verbally. All performers must stay on stage during performance.

MIME – SOLO, Time Limit, 4 min Jr. / 5 min Inter, Sr. & Adults - A performance of a brief story without words. The title may be announced out loud or displayed on a card before the performance begins. Musical background is permitted. A chair or a single prop may be used.
