It is the responsibility of competitors and teachers to follow the Rules & Regulations of the Festival. Entries are the responsibility of competitors and teachers. Errors or omissions are not the responsibility of the Festival.

All disciplines run at the discretion of the Festival, dependent on sufficient entries.

Additional rules for Pianoforte:
1. Photocopied music may not be used in the Penticton Kiwanis Music Festival without the written permission of the copyright holder (composer or publisher).

2. Selections are "Own Choice". Repeats are optional up to and including Grade 4 except da capos which must be observed. Piano concertos at all grade levels are to be performed without repeats except da capo.

3. Each competitor shall compete at the same grade level in all solo classes entered.

4. Memorization of music is expected in competitive solo classes, excluding Untitled Study. Three (3) marks will be deducted if the score is used. No marks will be deducted for using the score in duet, trio or quartet classes.

5. Participants in graded classes, except the Canadian Composers class, may only select repertoire, as listed from a current Royal Conservatory of Music or Conservatory Canada Syllabus. Abridged versions of classical music are not acceptable. Selections for the Canadian Composers Class must be composers who are recognized and published and be consistent with performer’s grade level. 6. Irregular List Pieces may be used if permission has been received from the appropriate Conservatory for use in an examination.

Introductory Level, Pianoforte Solo: One selection, own choice, level A or B. Level A selection to be no more difficult than Level 2 Bastien or its equivalent. Level A entries are non-competitive only. Level B selection should be at Level 3 or 4 Bastien or Introductory Album R.C.M. or equivalent. If a Bastien or Alfred’s piece has been chosen please indicate which book the piece is from. Classes will be subdivided by age.

Non-Conservatory Repertoire: This is a competitive class to be used for non-Conservatory pieces that do not fit into the introductory levels or other graded levels. It is not for pieces from outdated Conservatory syllabi, but is to be used for pieces written by contemporary composers (e.g. Martha Mier) which would be above the introductory level, and for popular pieces that are not on the RCM Popular Selection list or in the Conservatory Canada Contemporary Idioms Syllabus. Classes will be subdivided by age.A piece entered in this category cannot be considered as a Scholarship Requirement.

Additional Repertoire: This class is to be used only for Conservatory pieces that do not fit in any other category, or for a second piece in a category already entered.

Early Keyboard: Any selection from any composers of the Baroque period (1650-1750) Handel, Scarlatti, Telemann, etc., excluding those compositions of J.S. Bach.

J.S. Bach: Any selection composed by J.S. Bach only

Classical: Any one slow movement of a Sonata or Sonatina (state Opus # and Movement), or other selection from the Classical period (1750-1825). The selection should be from the Classical period or one composed in definite Classical style by a later composer. Quick movements of a Sonata or Sonatina will not be permitted.

Sonatina or Sonata: Any one quick movement from a Sonatina or Sonata (state Opus # and Movement). The selection should be one from the Classical period (1750-1825) or one composed in definite Sonata form by a later composer.

Multi-Movement Sonatina or Sonata Class: (Grade 6 and above): Two or more movements from one sonatina or sonata as listed in a current Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) or Conservatory Canada Syllabus.

Romantic: Any selection from any composer of the Romantic period.

Impressionistic: Any single work in late 19th century impressionistic style.

Twentieth & Twenty-First Century: Any Twentieth or Twenty-First Century work in contemporary idiom. Selections by Canadian composers must be entered in the Canadian Composers Category.

Canadian Composers: Any selection by a recognized and published Canadian composer.

Popular: Selection must be chosen from the current RCM popular selection list or the Conservatory Canada Contemporary Idioms Syllabus. Specified editions only.

Untitled Study/Etude: Any untitled study or etude from the current RCM or Canada Conservatory 'Study' books. (i.e. Study in A Major, Etude #5) Memorization is not required and no additional marks will be awarded for memorization. A piece entered in this category cannot be considered as a Scholarship requirement. Studies with descriptive titles must be entered in the correct category as determined by the composer and style of the study. (i.e. Little Bird, Ping Pong)

Sight Reading Requirements: The candidate will be given a brief period to scan the score. Do not count out loud. Entry in the sight reading class is required in order to qualify for Major Scholarships (The mark received will not be considered in the totals)

Concert Group: The Concert Group will consist of three selections at the participant’s grade level or higher. Participants will be judged on the discrimination shown in their selections, on the programme arrangement, on technique and interpretation. Time not to exceed 15 minutes; for ARCT and Open 20 minutes. Suitable dress and stage deportment will be expected.

Piano Concerto: One movement of any standard Concerto, orchestra parts to be played on a second piano, competitor to provide own accompanist, professional pianist allowed. Selection to be played without repeats.

Pianoforte Duet, Two Pianoforte Duet, Trio, Quartet: Use one entry form per duet, trio, quartet, with all players’ names, accompanied by full entry fee. If competitors are at a different piano grade level enter at the higher piano grade level. Students entered in the Non-Conservatory Repertoire class may enter a graded duet class at an appropriate level. The adjudicator must have a copy of the music for the duration of the performance.
