It is the responsibility of competitors and teachers to follow the Rules & Regulations of the Festival. Entries are the responsibility of competitors and teachers. Errors or omissions are not the responsibility of the Festival.

All disciplines run at the discretion of the Festival, dependent on sufficient entries.

1. We regret that special lighting is not possible.

2. Music must be taped on a cassette or CD. Please label with the competitor’s name and any specific instructions.
ONLY ONE DANCE PER TAPE. NOTE: Teachers must have music cued. Studios are requested to look after competitors’ music. The Festival will supply sound equipment.

3. Time limit for dancers is 3 minutes maximum for solos, 5 minutes maximum for duos and trios and 10 minutes maximum for groups and production numbers.

4. Stage will be marked for centre and quarter points. No other markings are permitted.

5. The same competitor may not enter first place entries in our previous festivals again.

6. Any dancer who leaves the stage during a performance shall be allowed one re-start for adjudication only.If the competitor is not at fault ie.failure of music or lighting,etc.,the repeat performance will be adjudicated and marked as usual.

7. Trio and group, class age is determined by adding all ages together and dividing by the number in the group. (i.e., 12.5 age 12 and under, 12.51 age 14 and under).

8. Duos are entered by the age of the older competitor.

9. Duos, trios, and groups are to be submitted on one entry form, with all names and ages listed on the back of the entry form, and accompanied by the full entry fee.

NOVICE - A student 11 years or over who has had no more than (two) 2 years dance lessons of any type as at entry deadline. Add “N” to class number.

11. A Small Group is 4 to 8 dancers, a Large Group is 9 or more dancers and a Production Number is 16 or more dancers.

12. No person may compete in 2 different entries in the same class. This includes GROUP DANCES.

13. Absolutely no changing of class is permitted during the Festival.

Group classes (4 or more) $5.00 per person

CLASSICAL DANCE SECTION

Ballet Demi-pointe: Classical technique, in soft shoes.One hand-held prop may be used if integral to the dance.

Ballet Pointe: Classical technique,in pointe shoes.One held-held prop may be used if integral to the dance.

Pas de Deux: Partnering by male and female dancers incorporating supported lifts and turns, using a classical based technique.

Demi-Character: Dancer must perform ballet enchainments from the waist down and character from the waist up. Props may be used providing they are an essential part of the dance.

Character (Classical): Ballet technique with stylized movement.Whole body portrays a specific character.
Props may be used providing they are an essential part of the dance.

Classical Interpretive: Any ballet technique may be used as long as the body is the medium of expression and interpretation of the music in order to portray an intangible thought,mood,real or imaginary.This form should express an idea,but not a story.No props permitted.

Modern Dance: A stylized dance form with a foundation in technically-based disciplines such as Duncan,Graham,Ailey,Horton,etc.Dance that rejects the limitations of classical ballet and which favours movement derived from the expression of inner feeling,free dance,contraction and release,fall and recovery,and dynamism.

Contemporary Interpretive: Free movement of dance encompassing various dance disciplines-a constantly evolving style of movement..

Character - National: (excluding all Highland dancing) A choreographed dance which portrays the traditional style of a specific country with or without the use of mime or props. Vocal and instrumental arrangements permitted.

National: (excluding all Highland dancing) - Folk dancing, which portrays the traditional style of a specific country. Instrumental and vocal arrangements permitted.

Recreational: Groups only, 9 years and up. This class is for the dancer that dances no more than 1 hour per week in a given discipline. ALL DANCERS IN GROUP MUST FIT THIS CRITERIA.

Classical/ Modern Workshops: Open to ALL dancers who meet age requirements. Dancers wishing to qualify for Provincial representation MUST take part. Late entries will be allowed but will not be eligible for Provincial Representation. (late fee is $15) Female ballet dancers must wear pink tights and a black leotard. Male ballet dancers must wear black tights and a plain white shirt. Modern dancers must wear a black unitard or leotard and black tights. Avoid loose fitting or excessively revealing clothing. Ages for Classical Workshops are Junior, 10-12 years, Intermediate, 13-15 years and Senior, 16-20 years old. Ages for Modern Workshop are the same.

STAGE DANCE SECTION

Jazz: Using Jazz style, technique and music

Acrobatic Dance: Dance movements incorporating more than 20% acrobatic tricks.

Modern Stage: Dance adapted from film or musical theatre productions, using any dance medium.  Must contain a minimum of 50% dancing.  Small amount of lip sync allowed.

Variey/Entertainment: a combination of any and all dance techniques.  Live voice, words, sound effects, acting and lip sync allowed.  **Note: A solo entered in this categroy is not accepted as a requirement for Provincial recommendation.

Lyrical: Interprets a mood or feeling using a jazz based technique and style, music with or without voice, or voice only.

Tap: Shoes with taps. Rhythm through footwork, style and presentation. No singing by performers. Taps must be covered while in the auditorium.

Hip Hop: Includes hip hop, street dance, break dancing, stomp, funk, etc.

Song and Dance: Routine suitable for a modern stage production. No vocals allowed on music track. If the performance is predominantly of a vocal nature, please enter in the Vocal section. Please state with or without taps. Performance should be 50% dance, 50% voice.

Production Number: Groups only, 16 or more dancers, maximum 10 minutes. Encompasses any variety of dance, song and theatre styles with a specific theme

Recreational: Groups only, 9 years and up. This class is for the dancer that dances no more than 2 hr per week and no more than 1 hr per week in a given discipline (i.e., one hr of tap and/or one hour of jazz or hip-hop per week). ALL DANCERS IN GROUP MUST FIT THIS CRITERIA.

Late entries will be accepted but not considered for provincial representation. (Late fee $15) All dancers should wear black leotard or tight fitting top and black jazz pants or a black unitard. Avoid loose fitting or excessively revealing clothing. Ages are Junior, 10-12 years, Intermediate, 13-15 years and Senior, 16-20 years old.
